Countdown:

Science

Our endeavour will be to gather crucial datasets to help benchmark the condition of the ocean for NASA funded National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) scientists, lead by Walt Meier. These deliver the reality of climate change to our audiences; the primary objective of the expedition.

On a daily basis we will be taking sea ice depth measurements using our hand held auger in order to provide the National Snow and Ice Data Center (NSIDC) with accurate measurements and readings which they can then use to assist in checking and calibrating the satellite images provided by NASA from space.

In addition we will be taking temperatures readings of the ice and snow samples for pollutant analsysis. The increased levels of particulate matter from pollution is increasing the rate at which the sea ice is beiung warmed by the sun and compounding the effect of global warming.

On return from expedition I hope to work for a charity tracking Polar bears and experiencing these awesome creatures in their own environment but in a more controlled fashion than should we encounter them upon expedition! The effect of global warming on these incredible animals is obviously not the only concern for the warming polar ice caps but does demonstrate to us just one effect of the way we are damaging our incredible but fragile world.
